'Knife in the Water,' 1962
Roman Polanski proved his artistic greatness with his first feature, a sinister, prickly-funny three-character movie. A well-off husband and wife (Leon Niemczyk, Jolanta Umecka) take on a student hitchhiker (Zygmunt Malanowicz) as a deckhand for a sailboat journey on the lakes of Mazury, in Poland. From the near-collision of Niemczyk's sports car to the climactic feigned death sequence, the movie recalls Elvis Costello's lyrics, "Accidents will happen/We only hit-and-run/He used to be your victim/ Now you're not the only one."
