The River Thames burst its banks yesterday, flooding up to 1,000 homes,
bringing chaos to some of the country’s busiest rail routes and transforming
towns and villages into lagoons.
More heavy rain is expected this week, with the Met Office forecasting up to
70mm (2.75in). It is estimated that the equivalent of almost 300 Windermeres
has fallen on the country since the storms began last December.
